Admission Policy 2013
The governing body of Medmerry School applies the regulations on admissions fairly and equally to all those who wish to attend this school.
2 Aims and objectives
2.1 We are an inclusive school that welcomes children from all backgrounds and abilities.
2.2 The only restriction we place on entry is that of number. If the number of children applying for entry exceeds the places available, we enforce the procedure set out in 2.3 in order to determine whether a child is accepted or not. It is our wish to allow parents the right to have a place at the school of their choice. However, this is not always possible, due to demand being greater than school places available.
2.3 All applications will be treated on merit and in a sensitive manner. Should we be oversubscribed we will choose those living nearest to school by way of a straight line. A catchment map is published on the school website.
The Medmerry School panel accept children using the following criteria:
i Any child with a statement of special educational need naming the school will automatically be admitted to a school, under Section 324 of the Education Act 1996.
ii Children who are currently or previously have been in public care, children of service personnel (UK armed forces) and children of school staff will be given priority.
iii Children living in the catchment area but with brothers and sisters already in school and who will still be attending when the child starts (brothers or sisters may be half or step-siblings but must be living permanently at the same address).
iv Children living outside the catchment area but with brothers and sisters already in school and who will still be attending when the child starts (brothers or sisters may be half or step-siblings but must be living permanently at the same address).

2.4 Waiting list
We will allow names of children who wish to transfer to Medmerry School, but are unable to join because we are full, to be placed on our waiting list. When a vacancy occurs we will choose names in the order of our admission criteria (see 2.3). Parents should confirm they wish their child to remain on the list at the start of every academic year.
3 How parents can apply for their child to be admitted to our school
3.1 Medmerry School is an academy school and is therefore its own ‘Admissions Authority’.
3.2 Medmerry School publishes a ‘prospectus and parents handbook’, which gives information about how parents can apply for a place. Expressing a preference does not, in itself, guarantee a place at this school. Application forms can be obtained from the school office.
3.3 When a parent is looking for a place for their child to start school for the first time the application process is coordinated by the Local Authority. Families are contacted by the LA during the autumn of the year before they are due to start school, to advise them of the application process. The applications are received by the LA by a set deadline (usually January). Parents can expect to hear which school they are allocated in the spring (usually April).
3.4 In the Selsey area, children enter school in the academic year they become five. There is one admissions date per year, early in September (i.e. at the start of the school year). Children born after 1st March start mornings only until the first week in October. If parents or school believe young children are still struggling with the long day then full time education may be postponed until a later date.
4 Admission appeals
4.1 If we do not offer a child a place at this school, it is because to do so would prejudice the education of other children by allowing the numbers of children in the school to increase too much.
4.2 If parents wish to appeal against a decision to refuse entry, they can do so by applying to an independent adjudicator. They have the right to have their case heard by an independent appeals panel. An appeals panel’s decision is binding for all parties concerned. If the appeals panel decides that we should admit a child to our school, then we will accept this and continue to do all we can to provide the best education for all the children at our school.
5 The standard number
5.1 The standard number is the number of children the school can accommodate.
We keep this number under review and the governors will apply to change the number if circumstances allow.
The standard number for our school is 210.

6 Infant class size
6.1 We teach infant children (aged five to seven) in classes that have a maximum number of 30 children.
7.1 This policy will be reviewed when changed circumstances happen due to government legislation, the local area, or our school.
7.2 The catchment area will be reviewed every 2 years in consultation with the LA and local schools.
